The first time I tried a Rauch Bier six years ago at The Rake, my taste buds got hit by an intense sensation of smoked bacon, with a pleasant warming sensation. From my first sip of the beer I have grown to love the beer style and led me to take a trip to Germany where the beer style is produced.
This classic beer is made in the picturesque town of Bamberg, in the Franconia region of Southern Germany. Two breweries have been producing the beer style for over 200 years and have many fans all over the world, which are Schlenkerla and Spezial, who kept the beer style going when other breweries changed the way the malts were roasted. To get the smoky flavour into the beer, the malt is roasted and dried over open flames.
To create our Rauch Bier, our second brewer Valerie, imported the malt direct from Bamberg based Weyermann Malz and brewed the beer to fit in with the Reinheitsgebot purity law. Using a pilsner yeast, gives the beer a crisp dry finish which combines really well with the smokiness of the malt to create an easy drinking beer.
If you want to match this food, it would be an ideal match with BBQ dishes, cured meats, burgers and gammon.
